West End Cultural Centre:  Kaia Kater, November 7

"…plaintive, mesmerizing…writes and performs with the skill of a folk-circus veteran…" -Rolling Stone

"Where bluegrass meets Nina Simone"
– The Guardian

The West End Cultural Centre is thrilled to welcome Grenadian-Canadian folk musician Kaia Kater to the WECC stage on Thursday, November 7th at 8:00pm.

Kater's music draws on two major influences in her life, her families deep connection to folk music and her years spent absorbing Appalachian music in West Virginia. Her old-time banjo skills as well as her song-writing and arranging have help garner her critical acclaim from NPR, CBC Radio, Rolling Stone, BBC Music, and No Depression.

Kater released her first EP (Old Soul) in 2013 and has since gone on to release two other albums in 2015 and 2016. Her hard-hitting songs touch on numerous social issues including the Black Lives Matter movement and living life in the digital age. Her 2016 album Nine Pin, won a Canadian Folk Music Awards and a Stingray Rising Star Award which sent her on a 18 month tour that included stops at The Kennedy Centre and Hillside Festival. Her most recent album, Grenades, was nominated for a 2019 Juno Award (Contemporary Roots Album of the Year) and long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize.
