Manitoba Chamber Orchestra: The MCO is named Classical Artist / Ensemble of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards
We are proud to announce that the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra was awarded Classical Artist / Ensemble of the Year at last week's ceremony for the 2019 Western Canadian Music Awards. Hosted by BreakOut West, the ceremony was held as at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in Whitehorse, YT as a part of BreakOut West's annual conference.
Competition for the title of Classical Artist / Ensemble of the Year was steep, with other nominees including Turning Point Ensemble and the Vancouver Chamber Choir. We our honoured that our album Mirage? Concertos for Percussion, which secured the prize for the MCO, should be nominated alongside the excellent albums released by these ensembles.
This is the second time the MCO has been in the running for a Western Canadian Music Award, previously earning a nomination for its 2012 album release of Troubadour & the Nightingale featuring Canadian soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian.
About Mirage? Concertos for Percussion
Mirage? Concertos for Percussion is a stunning CD collaboration between GRAMMY-winner Dame Evelyn Glennie and the JUNO-nominated Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Both the Winnipeg Free Press and La Scena Musicale give the album four-and-a-half stars out of five, and it has been consistently praised by international critics. Lush, lyrical, and wildly virtuosic, it features Glennie on vibraphone and marimba and includes favourite works by Canadian composers Christos Hatzis and Michael Oesterle, as well as Vivaldi and Corelli.
