Winnipeg Jewish Theatre: THE GOLEM'S MIGHTY SWING, November 16 - 24

Next WJT show hits it out of the park!

Winnipeg Jewish Theatre (WJT) presents THE GOLEM'S MIGHTY SWING from November 16 to 24, with a preview performance on November 14. This Canadian premiere is an adaptation of James Sturm's graphic novel by Marcus Jamin and a co-production with Toronto's Outside the March (OtM). Tickets for the show are available by calling (204) 477-7478 or online at

A puppet adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel by James Sturm, THE GOLEM'S MIGHTY SWING follows the story of the Stars of David- a 1920's barnstorming, Jewish baseball team that travels small-town America playing local squads. On the road, the team encounters a devastating financial hurdle, and are forced to make a compromising decision in order to keep their dreams alive.

"This play is so singular, it's a sure-fire not-to-be-missed theatrical event," says Ari Weinberg, WJT's Artistic Director. "When I heard the folks at Outside the March were working on a stage adaptation of a graphic novel that involved baseball, puppets and Jewish content I immediately contacted them to see if WJT could get involved somehow. I am so delighted that they agreed to co-produce this show with us and let it premiere in Winnipeg. This has been years in the making and is a true cross-country collaboration."

"Outside the March is thrilled to partnering with Winnipeg Jewish Theatre for the world premiere of THE GOLEM'S MIGHTY SWING," says Mitchell Cushman, OtM's Artistic Director and director of this production. "I've had the good pleasure of working with Marcus Jamin over the last four years to develop this project and I think it is the perfect piece to be told with puppets. For me, the appeal is rooted in the inherent theatrics of the game: each faceoff between batter and pitcher is a taut two-hander scene with the clearest of conflicting objectives."

THE GOLEM'S MIGHTY SWING stars Katherine Cullen, Toby Hughes, Jesse Nerenberg, James Smith and Ray Strachan. The show is directed by Mitchell Cushman; puppets and props designed by Marcus Jamin; Set and lighting design by Nick Blais and sound design by James Smith. Stage Manager is Ryan Bjornson and Apprentice Stage Manager is Ridge Romanishen. Assistant Director is Jillian Willems and Assistant Set Designer is Daina Leitold.

WJT's Season Sponsor is The Asper Foundation. WJT thanks The Winnipeg Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, Manitoba Arts Council, Winnipeg Arts Council and Jewish Foundation of Manitoba for their ongoing support.
