La Maison des artistes visuels francophones: Heirlooms - Freya Perron, January 9 - February 8

January 9 - February 8, 2020

This series of work is an examination of the contrasts within natural materials, imagined through a reflection on family, place, and home. Harsh shapes of granite rocks recreated by soft wools create works that merge traditional craft with modern forms and techniques. While building a new access road to her family's remote cabin in northern Ontario, Perron's work began to consider the roots and paths that connect generations.

By drawing attention to slow handwork and the fine details of woven textiles, Perron evokes the artistic practices of her mother and her late grandmother, and situates these familial recollections at the heart of her craft. Each work is woven on a floor loom with Canadian wools and is locally framed in maple.
