mozart masterpieces

Mozart operas delight us with beautiful music, enchanting composition, spectacular characters, and timeless storylines. Join Tadeusz Biernacki, Chorus Master and Assistant Music Director of Manitoba Opera as he offers a closer look at two of Mozart's most famous and beloved operas: The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. We will explore the historical background, characters, the plot, musical themes and structure, famous arias, and ensembles as we watch and listen to audio and video excerpts from international performances.

Taking Care of our mental health is important. Do you have a go-to song that you listen to on tough days? How do the life stories of your favourite artists affect how you listen to their music? What playlist do you put on before you write a big exam? These are some of the questions we will explore in Music & Wellness. This group will explore how we can use music to support ourselves and each other through song sharing, discussions, artist biographies, and various art forms. The needs and interests of each group member will guide the content as we work to create a toolbox of coping skills that can help you navigate these challenging times.

beginning ukulele

If you've never played an instrument before, the ukulele is the perfect place to start. Beginning the Ukulele is a 4 week course that will get your foot in the door with the hip instrument everyone wants to play. Students will learn about ukulele care and tuning, how to read chord charts, basic strums and their application to simple songs.

Instrument information: Soprano, Tenor or Concert Ukulele. We recommend the Kala K-AS mahogany soprano ukulele.

A clip-on ukulele tuner (Snark or similar) is required.

improvisation workshop

AGES 14+ with few years experience

Have you ever wanted to know how to improvise? How to make old songs feel new again? Did you ever feel like you weren't really able to express yourself on your instrument? Join Kyle Burghout, a North American Irish Fiddle Champion, for a weekly session of learning new fiddling repertoire. You will explore a variety of fiddling styles, including Old-Time, Metis, Quebecois, Cape Breton & Irish. This class is intended for those who have 3+ of violin or fiddling experience and are looking to explore new repertoire and make new friends. 2018 Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion Jane Cory will join Kyle in a few classes as a guest instructor.

Join MCMA voice instructors Sarah Witiuk and Sydney Clarke as they guide you through an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and how to apply it when interpreting languages such as French, German, Italian, and yes – English! Over the course of 90 minutes, participants will gather a basic understanding of IPA, as it applies to singing & speech in various languages. If you have always wanted to speak a language without a Canadian accent – this course is for you!
