Concerts

SECOND STAGE: October 13, 2021 at 7:30pm (WECC): "Bossamba" with Marco Castillo and Fabio Ragnelli

Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars. Quiet chords on my guitar. Floating on the silence that surrounds us.

Oh the picture that paints! The understated sophistication that is Jobim's music forever shapes our view of Brazil, its people and its music. Music has always been a vitally important part of Brazilian culture and, unsurprisingly, the infectious rhythm of bossa nova and samba was an instant hit upon its arrival in North America. Marco Castillo joins the WJO for performances of Jobim, Joao Bosco, Hermeto Pascoal and Gal Costa for a concert celebrating Brazil's greatest export.

SECOND STAGE: November 3, 2021 at 7:30pm (WECC): "Duke Ellington and Chaos at Newport"

The most famous band in jazz was playing empty rooms in the early 1950s. As jazz fans turned to cutting edge bebop over the old big-band swing, Ellington was forced to pay his band members out of pocket. That all changed at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival and a chaotic night that lives in infamy. Join the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, featuring saxophonist Niall Bakastaad-Legare, as we pay tribute to the remarkable night that revived Duke Ellington's Big Band, landed him on the cover of TIME Magazine and rocketed him back to super stardom.

SECOND STAGE: December 15, 2021 at 7:30pm (WECC): "Music from a Charlie Brown Christmas"

This encore performance (from our 2019-20 season) is a special request of the WECC and has become a holiday tradition in Winnipeg. The entertaining program, narrated by Quinn Greene and featuring vocalist Jayme Giesbrecht, is our own WJO version of the famous Charlie Brown Christmas story.
