Scirocco Manitoba High School Playwriting Program: Call for Submissions, Submission Deadline January 14

Scirocco Manitoba High School Playwriting Program

It's back, for it's 22nd year! MAP, generously supported by Scirocco Drama (an imprint of J. Gordon Shillingford Publishing Inc.) is once again looking for our region's next generation of playwrights. Selected high school playwrights and their plays will embark on a development journey from February to June, 2022, with dramaturgical support, readings, and a final public share of their work. The deadline for applications isn't until January 14th, 2022, but plays take time to write! If there are high school students in your orbit that you think might be interested, let them know. Information and application guidelines can be found here.

About the Program

Each year the Manitoba Association of Playwrights and Scirocco Drama invite high school students to submit short plays for the High School Playwriting Program, now in its 22nd year. A panel of theatre professionals select the successful applicants. And then the fun begins!

The playwrights work with professional dramaturgs (a playwright's best friend and help mate!) to help develop their play further, in a safe and supportive environment, through rewrites and workshops with actors. The program culminates in public readings.

This is an excellent opportunity to experience a professionally guided play development process, to work with young actors-in-training (the selected playwrights' peers and future collaborators), and to see their play performed before an audience of friends, family, and invited theatre professionals.

Plays may be sent by regular mail, or can be emailed to The entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, January 14th, 2022. The selected program participants will be notified no later than Friday, February 11th, 2022. Due to the number of anticipated applications, only those selected for the program will be notified.

Application Rules and Guidelines

Plays must be between 15 and 30 minutes in length. As a general guide, a properly formatted script is usually 1 & ½ to 2 minutes a page, 12 pt font, 8 ½ x 11 paper. Please note that monologues take a lot of stage time! A full-page monologue can be as much as 4 or 5 minutes long. It's a good idea to read your play out loud and time it to get a sense of how long it is. Plays

that are too long cannot be accommodated in the program.

Please number your pages!

Please see the example dialogue on the next page for proper formatting.

Plays must have a minimum of two characters, and a maximum of six characters.

Keep in mind that these are plays intended for the stage! Anything can be done in theatre, but you're best to avoid events and action in your play that would work better in film (car chases, explosions, etc.), and concentrate on the people in your story, and what they want.

Playwrights who have entered this competition in prior years are welcome to enter again. But please don't send us a play that was entered before. Write something new!

The cover page of your play MUST include your name, address, telephone number, email address, name of your school, and a teacher contact.

Playwrights must be students attending a high school in Manitoba.

Please be aware that the selected applicants should anticipate devoting considerable extracurricular time to the development process between February and May of 2022. It'll be fun, and worth it, but it requires your investment in the process.
