West End Cultural Centre: Jocelyn Gould Quartet, November 12
THE WEST END CULTURAL CENTRE WELCOMES JUNO AWARD WINNING GUITARIST JOCELYN GOULD BACK TO OUR STAGE
"a leader in the next generation of great mainstream jazz guitarists" – Howard Paul (Benedetto Guitars)
Fresh off winning the 2021 Juno Award for Jazz Album of the Year, Jocelyn Gould is back for a hometown show at the West End Cultural Centre. The award-winning guitarist will take the stage with her quartet to celebrate her debut album Elegant Traveler.
Jocelyn Gould is an accomplished guitarist, vocalist, and bandleader. She began playing guitar as a teenager and that led her to a bachelor's degree from the University of Manitoba and Masters of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University. Her music has taken her to New York City and to jazz festivals in St. Lucia, Detroit, and Toronto. She is currently a professor and the head of the guitar department at Humber College in Toronto.
Jocelyn's latest album 'Elegant Traveler' won the 2021 Juno Award for Jazz Album of the Year. The ten-track album features seven original tracks written by Gould with three others by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and Rogers & Hammerstein to fill it out. The album features a wealth of musicians that Gould has worked with, including Winnipegger (and Gould's former professor) Quincy Davis, on drums.
"It was while I was living in New York that we recorded this album," she said. "It was just a bunch of songs I had written over the years and it was sort of about living all the places I've lived, which have been plenty — a story about the places I've been.
Tickets for Jocelyn Gould's show on Friday, November 12th are $20 / $25 and are available now at wecc.eventbrite.ca.
