This is a term position commencing the first week of February 2018 and ending the last week of April 2018, with a possible extension to the end of July 2018.

Summary Statement

The Cutter is responsible for the quality standards of the Wardrobe Department. Responsibilities of this position may include interpreting designs to ensure functionality on stage, remounting existing shows and time management. The Cutter supervises the work flow of the Sewing Staff and provides assistance when necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Revise initial patterns as required
  • Attend dress rehearsals and take notes
  • Perform fittings and apply changes/corrections to the flat pattern
  • Take direction and work under time constraints with minimal supervision
  • Use information provided by designer to create the costume
  • Research the period, style, and techniques required to achieve the designer's concept to maintain design integrity through the interpretation of the sketch
  • Create flat patterns and draping
  • Determine yardage for fabric and trims
  • Cut fabric for costumes from pattern
  • Provide instruction to Sewing Staff

Working Conditions
This position utilizes standard equipment associated with a wardrobe department. Physical requirements include standing for long periods of time preparing patterns and cutting fabric, kneeling and bending during fittings.

Education and Qualifications

  • Five (5) years full time experience in a costume shop or professional theatre company as a Cutter, an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Knowledge of basic patterns with the ability to develop into dance wear
  • Experience working within budgets and delivering finished projects on time
  • Ability to develop sewing techniques from designer's concept
  • Ability to develop costume construction techniques
  • Understanding of period shapes and adjusting patterns
  • Knowledge of stretch fabrics and how they work
  • Clear Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry checks
