The Winnipeg Arts Council seeks an energetic, enthusiastic, arts-focused, and organized individual to serve as the Public Art Tour Guide for the 2018 tours season. The Public Art Tour Guide plans and leads biking and walking tours of the City of Winnipeg's collection of public art, imparting information about aesthetic, concept, and process. This year there will be 20 tours in total ranging from 1 to 3 hours each and taking place during lunch hours, in the evenings, and on weekends. Prior to the beginning of the tours season, the successful candidate will work with the Project Manager to prepare routes and scripts. They will be expected to learn about the Public Art Policy, public art process, and the City's collection of public art to a degree that they are confident speaking about it to with public.

This is a contract position. The successful candidate must be available to attend the March 22 Public Art Bus Tour from 6:30-9:30pm and to co-host our Jane's Walk on the weekend of May 4-6 for training purposes. Training and preparation time is flexible but all tour dates and times are set.

Major Responsibilities

  • Develop scripts and routes for tours in consultation with the Project Manager
  • Deliver scheduled tours on set dates
  • Learn about the City's public art collection and the Winnipeg Arts Council's Public Art Policy and process in order to speak knowledgably and answer questions on the subject
  • Gain knowledge about other visual landmarks of note along tour routes
  • Lead groups of citizens through the city on bike and on foot while discussing public art
  • Speak loudly to large groups in high-traffic areas
  • Keep track of tour attendance, responding to email queries, and creating post-tour reports

Required Skills

  • Friendly and energetic attitude
  • Ability to be on time for every tour
  • Bike riding and walking for long periods of time (must have own bike)
  • Experience and comfort with public speaking
  • Good knowledge of the arts
  • Ability to retain and recall detailed information
  • Excellent sense of direction and ability to follow a map
  • Flexibility to work lunch hours, evenings, and weekends, and ability to work in inclement weather
