Sarasvàti Productions: Call for Submissions: FemFest 2018 Bake-Off, Application Deadline July 31
CALL FOR MANITOBA WOMEN AND FEMALE IDENTIFYING PLAYWRIGHTS
FEMFEST 2018: STAGING RESISTANCE
Winnipeg's 16th Annual Festival of Life-Changing Plays for Everyone
Sarasvàti Productions is currently accepting applications for their 8th
annual FemFest Bake–Off which will take place on Monday, September 17, 2018.
The five, fearless playwrights selected for the Bake-Off must be available
for the event itself.
On Friday, August 17 at 10 a.m. our five playwrights will meet. They will
have eight hours to write a scene anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes in duration.
Writers will also be provided with three key "ingredients" they must
incorporate into their scene. Prior to the festival, each scene will receive
a few hours of direction with a team of talented, ensemble players, cast
prior to the scripts being written.
On Monday, September 17, the scenes will then be performed before a live
audience who will then vote for the scene they feel has the most potential
for development. The following year, the winner of the 2018 Bake-Off will
receive dramaturgical guidance to develop a full length script, which will
be read publicly as part of the FemFest 2019 line-up. Many of our Bake-Off
winners have gone on to successful careers as professional playwrights in
Winnipeg's theatre community and beyond.
To attract local talent, we are limiting our call for submissions to
Manitoba only. Both emerging and seasoned playwrights are encouraged to
submit. Participation in this event may be the motivation and inspiration
you need to get that scene out of your head and onto the page! Our winner
will also receive The Janet Taylor Bake–Off Award in the sum of $500.00!
FemFest's goal has always been to support women and female-identified
people. We use an inclusive definition of "women" and "female" and we
welcome ALL who fit under either of these categories/identifiers to apply.
Sarasvàti Productions is also committed to equity and actively encourages
applications from Indigenous people, persons with disabilities and visible
minorities. The Bake-Off is our opportunity to celebrate our local talent.
Your submission needs to include:
1. A cover letter with full contact information (address, phone # & e-mail)
2. A 100- word bio of the playwright
3. A 5-10 page writing sample (van be a scene or monologue) in pdf format.
All applications must be received by Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Submissions
should be e-mailed to: Bakeoff@sarasvati.ca .
