Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba:  The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba will be celebrating two new exhibitions

Brandon, MB - On Thursday, September 13th, the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba will be celebrating two new exhibitions. In the Main Gallery, "Between IV" will feature the fourth biannual exhibition of works by advanced students and recent graduates at Brandon University's Department of Visual and Aboriginal Art. In the Community Gallery, "Eye of the Beholder: An Exhibit by Members of the AGSM Figure-Drawing Group" will showcase works by students of all ages from the popular Gallery offered course.

"Between IV" explores overlapping themes of progression, strength, struggles, and growth. The exhibition includes twelve artists presenting over 20 works. These emerging artists demonstrate advanced technical skill in a variety of artistic mediums, including paintings, drawings, prints, installations, sculpture, ceramic works, and photography. The exhibition is curated by Jessie Jannuska, a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program at BU, as part of a mentorship in conjunction with the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective. "Between IV" will include artwork by Melanie Barnett, Lee Beaton, Tim Brown, Albyn Carias, Rebecca Driedger, Shannon Guimond, Mao Guolixuan, Annette Henderson, Kathy Metelski, Lori Ore, Franchesca Hebert Spence, and Linda Aleta Tame.

"Eye of the Beholder" presents the results of many eyes beholding one image—the human form. Every Thursday evening at the AGSM, a diligent group of artists work side-by-side, drawing a live model. Some of the artists have been participating in the group for decades, while some joined as recently as this year. Some of the participants deconstruct the body, producing abstraction, cubism, surrealism, or symbolism. Others seek to capture the play of light on flesh, constructing impressionistic images. A few opt for realism, or the complex visual vocabulary of expert cartooning. All focus on the process of seeing how the human body moves through space. "Eye of the Beholder" is a seriously playful collection of diverse images by like-minded colleagues who are serious about the human form.

"Between IV" opens September 13th, with a public reception to take place at 7:30pm, and will be shown until October 20th, 2018. Attendance is free and all are welcome. "Eye of the Beholder", currently on view, will also be celebrated at the opening reception, and will remain on display until September 29.

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is located at 710 Rosser Avenue. It can be accessed either from the Town Centre parkade, or from the first floor of the Town Centre Mall through the elevators near the library. Parking in the Town Centre parkade is free for AGSM visitors. The Gallery hours are: Monday 4PM - 9PM, Tuesday to Friday 10AM – 5PM, and Thursday 10AM - 9PM, as well as Saturdays from 12PM - 5PM.
