2019/2020 Salt Spring National Art Prize

Submissions for the 2019/2020 SSNAP awards begin on

Jan 10, 2019 and close May 31, 2019.

As director of the Salt Spring National Art Prize, I am excited to welcome all artists who are Canadian citizens and permanent residents to submit their work. I would like to let you know of three improvements we have made for this third biennial event.

Firstly, we have increased the prize money to $40,000 in total, making SSNAP one of the largest visual art prizes in Canada. This has been made possible because of the generous donations of private collectors and visual arts supporters.

Secondly, our national jury has been increased to four looking at the work and choosing the awards. This will further facilitate the diversity of expertise in the selection of our 50 finalists. The jury will be announced before the submissions open in January.

Thirdly, in order to help finalists with the shipping of the work to the exhibition, we have committed $10,000 towards artists' shipping expenses. This money will go directly to artists based on need. We will assist particularly east coast and remote community artists selected in order to guarantee the best work across the country continues to be submitted.

The Salt Spring National Art Prize aspires to engage and celebrate Canadian art. Our four-person jury of national art professionals choose the 50 finalists through a fair, open, blind jury system. The award winners are then named by the jury here on Salt Spring Island and announced at the Gala Awards Night. For dates and information please go to saltspringartprize.ca.

I would like to thank the Salt Spring Arts Council, our army of volunteers, our sponsors and donors, and the community of Salt Spring for this opportunity to bring you SSNAP 2019/2020. As an artist myself, I have been humbled and amazed at the quality of art entered into our prize competition and wish all the submitting artists good luck.
