Shakespeare in the Ruins: SIR ANNOUNCES NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Shakespeare in the Ruins (SIR) is delighted to announce Rodrigo Beilfuss as its new Artistic Director. Rodrigo will join the SIR family as of March, 2019 after spending four seasons at the Stratford Festival.

Rodrigo Beilfuss has worked for more than fifteen years as a professional actor, director and teacher. He was born and raised in Brazil, trained at England's London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and spent four seasons at the celebrated Stratford Festival in Ontario - but Rodrigo has always called Manitoba home. It was in Winnipeg, as a shy 18-year-old exchange student, where he was "called to the Bard", discovering 'Hamlet' in Mr. Gord McLeod's English class at St James Collegiate. The experience intoxicated him, and he never looked back.

"I am incredibly excited to be returning to my hometown to lead this special company!," says Mr. Beilfuss. "Winnipeg's artistic community has experienced a significant change in leadership over the past two years, and these are electrifying days. Shakespeare in the Ruins gave me my first professional theatre job, hiring me straight out of university. They took a leap of faith, as all I had was heart and desire, and very little technique or self-awareness. I am very grateful to the Board and to SIR for yet another leap of faith: my first professional Artistic Directorship. I am approaching the task with great humility and lively verve; and I am committed to broadening the horizons of classical theatre by presenting Shakespeare as a deeply personal and pleasurable experience for now: via community engagement, and cultural representation and diversity."

"This is the first time we have hired an Artistic Director from outside the fold of SIR's long-time artistic associates and company founders – so it's important that we get it right" says Scott Erickson, Chair, SIR Board of Directors. "Rod's vision and artistic voice, his experience and energy, combined with his infectious enthusiasm for all things Shakespeare make the board confident we have made the right choice. We hope the Winnipeg theatre community will welcome him and share our excitement about what he will bring to SIR!"
