Poetry is just the evidence of life. If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. ― Leonard Cohen
The Winnipeg Arts Council is marking National Poetry Month by announcing that we will begin the search for the City’s inaugural Poet Laureate. Drawn from Winnipeg’s varied and diverse literary communities, the Poet Laureate will promote poetry, literacy, and the arts in our city. Winnipeg will proudly join the ranks of Canadian municipalities appointing an ambassador for the arts to celebrate our community through poetry.
Winnipeg’s Poet Laureate will champion the literary arts and participate actively in the cultural life of our city. Through the creation of new works of poetry reflecting life in the city, public appearances and the creation of public engagement programs, the Poet Laureate will contribute to Winnipeg’s reputation as a city of the arts and facilitate connections between the arts, the city, and its citizens.
The search will be conducted in consultation with members of Winnipeg’s poetry communities, and the Poet Laureate will be officially named in the fall of this year.
More detailed information on the application and selection process will be announced in May.
