2024 SPRING STUDIO VISITS
PLATFORM is excited to announce a round of hybrid spring studio visits! These visits are with Justin Bear L’Arrivee (MB) and Areum Kim (AB).
Please request a studio visit through our google form. Let us know who you would like to meet with, and we will do our best to pair you up with your chosen artist/curator. Each artist/curator will meet with four artists. As there are limited spots available, studio visits with be book on a first-come-first serve basis.
Once your visit has been confirmed, your email address will be shared with the curator who will be visiting you. In advance of your visit, you will be asked to provide them with a CV, bio, artist statement, and a max of 20 images or links to your website(s).
Once paired up, the artist/curator will contact you to set up a date and time for your meeting.
Justin Bear L’Arrivee (he/him) is of mixed Cree and Scottish ancestry from Peguis First Nation (Maternal) and a citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation (Paternal). He is an arts administrator, facilitator, and community worker who’s passionate about revitalizing Indigenous ways of being through arts and culture. He is currently the Artistic Director at Urban Shaman: Contemporary Indigenous Art.
With a focus on program development, community projects, and youth mentorship, his journey has been driven by a deep commitment to empowering and uplifting Indigenous voices. His practice is firmly rooted in community needs, and is deeply informed both by his work within the child-welfare & disability systems and in the artist-run centre sector.
Justin’s goal is to build decolonial spaces that foster Indigenous creativity, challenge oppressive systems, and build momentum for the next generation of Indigenous artists.
Areum Kim (she/her) is a writer, book-maker and arts organizer based in Mohkinstsis/Calgary, AB. Her research is often concerned with diaspora and translation. With her collaborator, she runs Yolkless Press, an initiative to make artists’ publications. She has been working in artist-run centres including Access Gallery (Vancouver, BC), The New Gallery (Calgary, AB) and Stride Gallery (Calgary, AB) in the past ten years. She is currently working as a Public Art Project Lead at Calgary Arts Development.
