Employment Period: September 16, 2024 to March 14, 2025
Salary: $19.91/hr to $28.50/hr, depending on experience
Full time, 35 hours per week

About the Position:
Reporting to the Director/Curator and working closely with all Gallery staff, the Gallery Assistant will work on activities and projects pertaining to collections management, exhibitions, and outreach.
A significant focus of the Gallery Assistant’s work will be within the Permanent Collection, where they will be responsible for assisting with an artwork audit, photo documenting artworks, and inputting data into the Gallery’s collections database. They will also assist with the conservation of artworks, creating archival mats, storage containers, and supports for artworks in a variety of media.
They will also be involved in the installation and strike of four exhibitions, helping to prep the Gallery for these shows and assisting with the crating, condition reporting, and installation of loaned artworks. They will also produce visual descriptions that help visitors with vision impairment understand and appreciate the art and exhibitions at SoAG.
During the run of these exhibitions, the Gallery Assistant will play a role in facilitating visitor experiences, engaging in conversations about art, exhibitions, and ideas. They will lead tours for community groups and SoA classes, and may assist in the presentation and delivery of public workshops and outreach programming.
Education and Experience:
The ideal candidate will have:
- Completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art, Art History or a related field
- Demonstrated strengths in reading, writing, and verbal communication
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software suite
- Met the eligibility requirements for the Young Canada Works Program
The following are considered assets:
- An interest in, and knowledge of, Canadian contemporary and historical art
- Experience operating a DSLR camera and copy stand
- Experience using Adobe Photoshop
- Art handling experience
- Experience with database management software
- Public speaking experience
- Experience working or volunteering in a public art gallery, museum, artist-run centre or library

- An effective written and verbal communicator
- Able to work effectively as part of a team
- Able to work without continuous supervision
- Able to work well under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Friendly and engaged, with excellent interpersonal skills
Young Canada Works Criteria:
The candidate must be:
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada. Non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Willing not to have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program
- Unemployed or underemployed
- A college or university graduate
- Not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program.
Please note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.
Job Context and Working Conditions:
The Gallery Assistant will be seated in an open office area with regular coworker interaction. The position requires some physical work, including light to moderate lifting, the use of hand and small power tools, and manual dexterity. The position may require the Gallery Assistant to work occasional evening hours until 8:00 pm for Gallery events.
