Hester Street

A surprise success of the exciting New York independent film scene of the 1970’s, Hester Street by Joan Micklin Silver (Crossing Delancy) is among the great cinematic portraits of Jewish Life in America. Featuring the breathtaking, Oscar nominated performance of a young Carol Kane, it tells the story of Gitl, a young woman who has just reached America from Russia, with her young son intending to be reunited with her husband Yankel. Yankel though has turned his back on the old-world ways (and is having an affair with a dancer).

Hester Street meticulously reconstructs this bygone haven for Jewish immigrants to masterfully paint one woman’s journey to assimilation and her arrival at the crossroads of tradition and modernity.
