Features Editor

THE UNITER IS HIRING A FEATURES EDITOR

The Uniter is seeking a skilled, diplomatic and well-informed person to fill the role of features editor. This person should have experience editing and providing feedback on writing to their peers.

Successful candidates should feel comfortable maintaining an editorial calendar, helping to shape and direct written and visual-based cover features, editing their peers’ work, providing feedback, organizing meetings and staying informed about current issues in many of Winnipeg’s diverse communities.

Applicants should have a flexible schedule and be available for pitch meetings, editorial meetings, section meetings and mentorship during the regular academic year (late-August to early December/January to early April.) Daytime meetings usually occur on Thursdays.

This position is expected to take approximately 20 hours per week and pays $345/week. The features editor will begin their term in mid-August.

Skill Requirements:

  • Should have at least 2 years experience in writing mid to long-form pieces (500-1750 words) and in writing cutlines
  • Must have experience editing
  • Ability to multitask, make decisions and work independently
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
  • Knowledge of Google Drive and Docs
  • Ability to oversee, mentor and lead a team of staff
  • Ability to maintain deadlines

Duties:

  • Work closely with managing editor to assign weekly cover features to Uniter staff
  • Develop and edit cover features with staff on an ongoing basis
  • Work with the features reporter to pitch and edit the weekly Whose House and PROFile features
  • Provide constructive feedback to contributors within section
  • Must attend editorial and pitch meetings
  • Ensure cover features contain a balanced and varied range of topics over the course of the publishing year
  • Work closely with copy and style editor to ensure all work is factual and formatted properly for print
  • Review and follow all relevant policies and guides including Canadian Press style, the Canadian Association of Journalists ethics guidelines, the Uniter style guide and Uniter editorial policies.

Relationship to colleagues:

  • Reports to managing editor and business manager
  • Supervises features reporter
  • Supervises other editorial staff, reporters and photographers while they are scheduled for the cover feature
  • Collaborates with copy and style editor, volunteer coordinator and photo team
