PHOTO EDITOR

THE UNITER IS HIRING A PHOTO EDITOR

The Uniter is seeking an up-and-coming, motivated individual to take over the photographic aspects of the paper. The successful candidate should feel comfortable running a team of volunteer and paid contributors, assigning their work, providing feedback, organizing meetings and communicating with the managing editor and business manager. This individual should be available to work odd hours and be flexible to coordinate photo shoots that fit with subjects’ schedules. They should also be available to attend weekly meetings.

This position has a term contract which runs during the regular academic year (late August to December/January to early April). This position is expected to take approximately 20 hours per week and pays $390/week. The Photo Editor will begin their term in late August.

Skill Requirements:

  • Formal diploma or equivalent experience in photography
  • Ability to multitask, make decisions and work independently
  • Knowledge of Google Drive and Docs
  • Ability to oversee, mentor and lead a team of staff and volunteers
  • Ability to maintain deadlines
  • Should have some experience in print media

Duties:

  • Responsible for all cover art and feature images
  • Must assign and collect photo assignments to accompany written work on a weekly basis
  • Provide constructive feedback to contributors within section
  • Must attend editorial meetings
  • Review and follow all relevant policies and guides including Canadian Press style, the Canadian Association of Journalists ethics guidelines, the Uniter style guide and Uniter editorial policies.

Relationship to colleagues:

  • Report to managing editor and business manager
  • Supervises staff photographer and volunteer contributors
  • Collaborates with features editor, copy and style editor, creative director, and writers of assigned articles
