Gathering Light: Capturing Community showcases artwork created by the South Valour Residents Association in collaboration with artist Sarah Crawley through the Winnipeg Arts Council’s WITH ART program. The artwork reflects the South Valour community with two photo-collage panels at the Isaac Brock Community Centre and a standalone trail plaque at Omand’s Creek, just east of the teal footbridge near Riddle Avenue and Denson Place.
This project has been two years in the making, with community members coming together to explore the neighbourhood and create art that reflects its energy and sights. From crafting pinhole cameras for solargraphy to printing with plants at Omand’s Creek, these artworks are a true community achievement. “Our WITH ART project with artist Sarah Crawley was special because it gave us a chance to connect with our neighbours in a fun, hands-on way," said Steering Committee member Jess Klassen. "Meeting regularly to make art and learn new skills was a great experience.”
The SVRA wanted to collaborate with an artist to build stronger connections, create a shared community identity, improve safety in non-oppressive ways, and beautify the area.
The mural unveiling will be followed by the SVRA’s AGM and a community feast at the Centre for Spiritual Living, 625 Spruce Street.

About the WITH ART Program
Through the WITH ART program, the Winnipeg Arts Council pairs artists with community groups to collaborate on public art projects that reflect shared goals and ideas. Engaging in the artistic process with professional artists allows communities to express themselves and often gain new insights. Once completed, the artworks are celebrated with a public launch and become part of the City of Winnipeg’s Public Art Collection.
About Winnipeg’s Public Art Program and the Winnipeg Arts Council
Winnipeg’s Public Art Program enhances public space and brings people together, celebrating the unique character of Winnipeg, a city built on Treaty 1 Territory, on the lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene Peoples, and in the homeland of the Métis Nation. The Winnipeg Arts Council, as an agency of the City of Winnipeg, supports and champions the arts to enhance city life on behalf of the people of Winnipeg.
