Kumihimo Workshop

Loading map...

Join Susan Styrchak for an introductory workshop on Kumihimo, a Japanese braid making technique. Worked on a disk, it can be made with as few as 8 strands, but some are made with over 40 strands. The finished product can be used as an embellishment for garments, bags and more, or for jewelry.

In this workshop, Styrchak will present some of the historical connections to the kumihimo technique and all will learn the basic movements of the braid on a disc. Hopefully, later there will be a chance to try it on the marudai, a traditional kumihimo frame.

Notes will be provided of various patterns as they are formed with colour or alternate movements.

Participants will receive a kumihimo disk and all the supplies to make 2-3 short cords. They will learn a few different patterns, and will leave with knowledge on how to continue to explore the technique.

About the instructor:

In 1968 I was walking through Polo Park and saw a demonstration of weaving by the Crafts Guild of Manitoba, signed up for a class and have been weaving ever since. In fibre arts, one thing often leads to another and there are many paths to explore. I weave a lot of rugs and blankets, plus the occasional tapestry.
