Registration open for MTYP's School fall courses

Classes start September 16

(July 5, 2023 – Winnipeg, Manitoba) – Manitoba Theatre for Young People’s School is now taking registrations for its fall and winter sessions. In total, there are over 70 courses for ages 1-18, with Fall classes starting on September 16. The theme for the 2023/24 school year is Grow Your World.

"Students at MTYP grow in so many ways over the course of a class," says Vern Thiessen, School Director. "Drama is more than just important - it's essential: we're teaching children not only how to use their voice and imagination, but also how to connect and act with compassion and empathy."

MTYP is debuting a new set of classes for children with autism. I Can Pretend! teaches children on the autism spectrum how to play with peers and form relationships. Created by Demetra Hajidiacos, a seasoned drama educator and parent with a child on the autism spectrum, this program uses best practice teaching including modelling, picture activity schedules, familiar routines, repetition, and reward. The program was first piloted at MTYP in 2009 and is now returning home to MTYP nearly 15 years later. I Can Pretend! offers classes starting at age 5 all the way up to teens.

In addition to I Can Pretend, new courses for teens include production, directing, dramatic writing, the art of drag, and a class called Shakespeare's Gruesome Endings.

Last year, MTYP's School launched new classes for toddlers (12-24 months). Play Together, is an introduction to drama for toddlers and their caregivers. On Tuesdays and Fridays, caregivers enter the land of make-believe in a creative, nurturing, and exhilarating environment for their children.

From Dramaventures for toddlers and their caregivers, to directing for teenagers, MTYP’s School offers courses for young people at all experience levels and ages. There is also a limited number of need-based bursaries for students who require financial assistance.
