The Light Ahead
One of the great films of American Yiddish pre-WWII Cinema, directed by esteemed film noir director Edgar G. Ulmer (Detour). Both a touching social drama and a poignant social comedy it follows Fishke and Hodel, a young couple living with disabilities. The impoverished couple dream of life in the big city of Odessa, free from the shtetl’s poverty and stifling old-word prejudices. The benevolent and enlightened bookseller Mendle helps them, turning small town superstition to their advantage by brokering a ‘black wedding.’

“Beverly and Opatoshu are perhaps the most beautiful couple in the history of Yiddish cinema, and their scenes have a touching erotic chemistry.” J Hoberman, Bridge of Light: Yiddish Film Between Two Worlds
