The Poetry of Painting

The Poetry of Painting is a new exhibition at MHC Gallery, opening January 31 and running until March 22. The exhibition features the paintings of three local artists: Mavi Brake, Genevie Henderson, and Angela Lillico. The artists invited 24 different poets to respond to their paintings, creating an ekphrastic poetry collection curated by Luann Hiebert, PhD. Included in the exhibition are poems by 2020-22 Winnipeg poet laureate Duncan Mercredi and Thin Air 2024-featured writer Angeline Schellenberg – to name just a few!

With the poems and paintings on display side by side, viewers can experience the emotional, transformative power of art in entirely new and multifaceted ways.

Exhibition is open: January 31-March 22, Mon-Fri: 8:30am-4:30pm and Saturday: 12-5pm.

Join us for a special closing event in honour of World Poetry Day! March 22, 1-3pm. The event will feature a tour of the exhibition featuring 15 selected poems with readings by the authors, next to the painting they responded to.
