Come play with us...
For Nuit Blanche 2018, the Winnipeg Arts Council presented Impulse, a family-friendly publicly activated light and sound experience made up of a series of illuminated seesaws. When put into motion by people the seesaws form units of light and sound to create an ever-changing composition powered by play. Impulse is an urban instrument where the public gets to be the the musicians and artists. By playing on the seesaws, you create a dynamic light and sound wave giving a pulse to Old Market Square.
The installation was inspired by the iconic cover of the Joy Division album “Unknown Pleasures”, as well as Steve Reich’s serial, minimal music, which plays with repetition, rhythm and syncopation. It explores how architecture can visualize sound. Impulse embodies ideas of serialism, repetition, and variation to produce zones of intensity and calm within a public space.
Impulse is a creation by Lateral Office and CS Design, in collaboration with EGP Group, with sound design by Mitchell Akiyama, Mechanical design and fabrication by Generique Design, and Electronic design and fabrication by Robocut Studio.
