Storefront Manitoba: Cool Gardens - Masked Conversations Public Exhibition

The newest Cool Gardens project, Masked Conversations has been installed at The Forks.

Masked Conversations, the winner of Storefront Manitoba's 2021 Cool Gardens design competition is a new addition to the Manitoba Theatre for Young People's courtyard space at The Forks.

The 2021 Cool Gardens Competition was the first student Call for Entries in collaboration with the University of Manitoba. Cool Gardens is a public exhibition of contemporary gardens and art installations that offer a shift of sensation for the summer – cooling – as a general theme. The exhibit aims to bring architects, designers, landscape architects, artists, and the public together, celebrating contemporary garden culture and the local landscape. Cool Gardens is organized by Storefront Manitoba in partnership with The Forks.

"After a few pandemic-related hiccups, Storefront Manitoba is so excited to have our latest Cool Gardens installation up at The Forks. These whimsical characters are a great addition to the Cool Gardens family, engaging visitors from near and far in a lighthearted exchange on the tragicomedy of life." – Storefront Manitoba Executive Director Jaya Beange

Masked Conversations was designed by Chukwuebuka Idafum, Kenyo Musa, and Victor Odusanya, a team of 3 students from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Masked Conversations responds to the context of the site, a "theatre", a place where a play is staged, and a relationship between the audience and the performance is established. This playful sculpture garden represents "the cast", telling a story through facial expressions. The project creates an obscured conversation between the audience and the cast.

The 2021 Edition of Cool Gardens was generously supported by Canada Council for the Arts, The Forks, the University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture, the Student Innovation Enrichment Fund (SIEF), and the FAUM Endowment Fund.
