"Experiencing Eden: Disability and the Natural World" by L'Arche Winnipeg

August 7 - 23, 2025

The Studio - La Maison des artistes visuels francophones

Opening Reception: Thursday, August 7th at 7pm

Where do you see beauty? What smells make you feel at home? What kinds of textures make you feel alive and connected to the world? Which sounds fill you with peace or wonder?

For many of L’Arche Winnipeg’s artists, beauty is experienced most profoundly in nature- in the curved lines of a vibrant orange tiger lily; in the earthy aroma of rain falling on dry soil; in the refreshing embrace of a cool breeze; in the enveloping chorus of forest birds and bugs.

As humans, we are all part of an ecosystem- we vulnerably depend on others for our survival, and generously give life and care to others in return. Though it can be easy for many to forget about our interdependent nature, those living with disabilities and their relational networks are called to acknowledge this interdependence every day. When we eat food from our garden, care for a pet, support a friend or accept help from others, we are reminded that we thrive in the ebb and flow of giving and taking. In nature, we are reminded of who we are and where we belong in the family of things.

Through our art, we share how we- people with and without disabilities- perceive the natural world in beautifully different ways. Our senses bring us color, texture, scent, and sound- helping us connect to ourselves and the world around us. So join us in the garden, as our artists with disabilities share their favourite places, colors, plants, animals, and sounds of the natural world.
