Maker-in-Residence @ the Winnipeg Public Library (Deadline)

The MiR works out of Millennium Library’s ideaMILL with public drop-in open studio time. In addition, scheduled workshops are held in the ideaMILL and library branches.

Applications are open for our next three terms:

Term 1: late January to early May

Term 2: mid-May to late August

Term 3: early September to mid-December

Activities:

The MiR works approximately 18 hours a week to plan and deliver public programs based on their personal expertise and creative work. The MiR mentors and teaches community members of various skill levels through their public drop-in open studio time and structured workshops. They have access to ideaMILL equipment and library staff assistance.

During their residency, the MiR creates and leads:

Weekly, scheduled drop-in open studio hours (3-hour x 3 times/week) in the ideaMILL that allows them to create and share their skills on-site with library visitors. The MiR works on their own art/creations and acts as a mentor for library visitors who want to develop new skills or hone existing ones.

Five (5) scheduled workshops during their term (minimum of 2 hours each) teaching their skillset to participants. Each workshop is a single, not cumulative, experience.

Schedules for the MiR are defined at the start of the term in collaboration with library staff. The MiR should be available across a mix of days and evenings/weekends. Successful applicants will require a police information check at their expense.

Each MiR receives a stipend of $13,000 for the 15-week term and a budget of up to $2,000 for supplies for use in the program. Supplies are purchased by the library.

The role of the library:

Collaboration will be ongoing between the MiR and library staff during the term. The library will provide access to the ideaMILL for studio time on a mutually agreeable schedule and library staff will:

Provide support to the MiR including in the planning and delivery of workshops

Publish the drop-in studio and scheduled workshops to the online Programs & Events calendar

Take registration for scheduled workshops

Create marketing materials including social media

Ensure copies of workshop handouts, activity guides, etc., are made and available for workshop participants

Reserve technology as needed for use at scheduled drop-in open studio hours and workshops, including: 3D printer, sewing machines, computers, sound booths, etc.

Please note: There is no dedicated studio space available for the MiR.
