Maryam Bagheri

Unwinding Complexity: Reflections on Disentanglement

Exhibition on view: May 23 – June 20, 2025

Bagheri’s interdisciplinary work explores contemporary themes of memory, diaspora and feminism through painting, sculpture, and weaving. By integrating cultural patterns and elements with contemporary processes, she creates thought-provoking works that invite new perspectives along with personal and cultural touches. Her recent body of work incorporates weaving as both a material and a conceptual gesture. These pieces invite reflection on the gender and cultural aspects of craft, particularly its relation to women's labour, while challenging the historical hierarchies that have privileged fine art over craft.

Maryam Bagheri is an emerging, Iranian-Canadian artist based in Winnipeg. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2023) from the School of Art at the University of Manitoba, where she is currently finishing her Master of Fine Art. In 2024, she was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS-M) from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) in recognition of her artistic research. Bagheri’s work has been exhibited locally and nationally. In 2023, her paintings were featured in the BFA graduation exhibition at the University of Manitoba and selected for Fresh Paint/New Construction at Art Mûr Gallery in Montréal.
