Position: Production Stage Manager
Type: Permanent, Seasonal (10 to 11 Months depending on length of Season)

Weekly Rate: $1069.93 plus 4% vacation pay

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is a dynamic musical force serving Manitobans with excellent musical opportunities and experiences. Celebrating its 76th anniversary, the WSO produces roughly 60 events and concerts per year, actively engaged in new program development, education and outreach, major concert series, and several festivals with the objective of delivering artistically excellent symphonic music at the highest level. The WSO operates with a staff of roughly 60 musicians, 24 full-time and part-time administrative and production personnel. It is a non-profit organization with a Board of Directors.
Stage Manager Role:
1. Responsible for the execution of technical, production, and stage management details for all assigned events including set-up/strike and concert management (i.e. show calls & management of stage moves).
2. Work in collaboration with the Artistic Department and house technical crew to satisfy the staging and equipment requirements for each rehearsal and performance, including the preparation of stage plots. Remain available to Music Director and Director of Production & Operations during all rehearsals and performances to assist with tasks, sets changes, requests, etc.
3. Ensure the physical work environment for orchestra is safe, conducive to music-making, and in compliance with the Collective Agreement. Provide sound shields, ear protection, and other relevant equipment as requested by musicians.
4. Assist the Director of Production & Operations with the supervision of audio, lighting, video and other technicians supporting WSO productions at our home venue, the Centennial Concert Hall, on run-outs provincially, or on national/international tours.
5. Ensure orchestra & guest artist dressing rooms and warm-up areas are available and in good condition.
6. Arrange and purchase artist hospitality as needed. Support guest artists with ground transportation requirements.
7. Responsible for the safe transport and storage of WSO equipment.
8. Assist the Director of Production & Operations with the budgeting, planning and execution of efficient crew calls for all WSO activities.
9. Maintain accurate inventory records of WSO stage equipment, instruments and other items stored at the concert hall. Oversee and undertake maintenance of equipment as needed.
10. Season planning: assist the Director of Production & Operations by reviewing technical riders, concert production schedules, and flagging any potential problems prior to season announcement.
11. Make archival audio/video recordings if necessary.
12. Provide operational support to other WSO departments to ensure their successful event planning & execution.
13. All other duties as assigned by the WSO’s Artistic Planning Department.
Qualifications:
1. Completion of a post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate in technical theatre, or equivalent professional experience.
2. Three years of recognized professional experience working in a professional theatre fly house. Experience with theatrical concert lighting and experience calling fly cues with counterweigh rigging system, for music, theatre, drama, opera, or dance performances.
3. A self-motivated collaborative, team-focused leader, with experience motivating crews.
4. Solid problem solving, decision making including the ability to research and present options.
5. Experience working in a variety of venues such as concert halls, black box theatres and outdoor spaces is an asset.
6. Effective written and verbal communication, as well as proven organizational skills.
7. Ability to balance multiple, large projects and day-to-day activities successfully.
8. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Outlook, Word and Excel.
9. Experience with Vectorworks, AutoCAD or similar CAD software.
10. Knowledge of current Occupational Health and Safety standards and regulations.
11. Basic audio/video skills preferred.
12. Ability to reach music and experience with classical music preferred.
13. Experience with OPAS or other orchestra management software.
Position Information:
Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
As an employee of the WSO, the terms of employment are subject to an agreement between the WSO and IATSE Local 63. The incumbent shall be, or be able to become, a member of IATSE Local 63.
