Elwick Village Youth Printmaking Project

The Elwick Village Youth Printmaking Project explored how spending time together making art can build a sense of community and family. Through creative expression, this project enriched the lives of participants and celebrated the strength of coming together.

Community children and youth collaborated with artist Kelly Campbell during regular printmaking workshops. These workshops not only provided hands-on art-making experiences but also introduced participants to Winnipeg’s arts scene through field trips to the Winnipeg Art Gallery, First Fridays in the Exchange and the Martha Street Studio. For many, this was their first time exploring these cultural spaces.

Art created by Elwick’s children and youth included drawings by the Kids’ Club and screen prints by the Youth Club. These works were shared with the community in unique ways. Youth distributed posters featuring their screen prints throughout the neighbourhood, encouraging the public to take one home. The creative process was also captured in an experimental video (coming soon).

The project included a practical exploration of printmaking. Participants learned how a single screen could be used to make multiple prints, experimenting with printing on not only paper, but fabric swatches and T-shirts as well. These designs were assembled into a quilt and banners displayed in the Elwick Village Resource Centre.

The project was celebrated in community with a pizza party and video screening on February 19 at 5:30 at the Elwick Village Resource Centre.
