The Annual Winnipeg Arts Council Awards
About the Winnipeg Arts Council Awards
The Winnipeg Arts Council Awards celebrate the artists, arts administrators, and patrons whose dedication makes Winnipeg a centre for cultural achievement and a true City of the Arts. The awards are presented each June at the Mayor's Luncheon for the Arts.
This year’s luncheon took place on Friday June 14th, 2019 at the Fort Garry Hotel.
Nominations are made by Winnipeg’s artists and arts organizations with the winners selected by a jury composed of members of the city’s diverse arts and business communities. The jury considers all eligible submissions received and then determines the final list of Nominees as well as the Award winner in each category.
Awards to Artists and Arts Administrators
Three awards recognize excellence and creativity in the arts: the RBC On The Rise Award, the Making a Mark Award and the Making a Difference Award.
The RBC On The Rise Award recognizes the demonstrated promise of an emerging, professional Winnipeg artist in any discipline. This award is intended to help with the artist’s professional development. The jury may consider individuals of any age who have recently embarked on an artistic career. The 2019 RBC On The Rise Award recipient will receive a cash prize of $5,000.
The Making a Mark Award applauds an established professional Winnipeg artist in any discipline, who is receiving critical recognition for excellence in their art practice in Winnipeg and beyond. The 2019 Making A Mark Award recipient will receive a cash prize of $5,000, generously supported by Gail Asper, O.C., O.M., LL.D.
The Making a Difference Award celebrates the contribution of a Winnipeg artist or arts professional to the growth and development of the arts in any discipline in Winnipeg. This award will likely go to someone well-established in their field. The 2019 Making A Difference Award recipient will receive a cash prize of $5,000.
Awards to Patrons of the Arts
Two awards are presented to recipients from outside the arts community but whose ongoing support to the community is vital to the success of the arts in Winnipeg.
The Arts Champion Award honours an individual, a business or a non-arts organization that has demonstrated sustained support to the arts in Winnipeg. The award will be a unique work of art.
The Outstanding Volunteer Award honours an individual who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to volunteerism within the Winnipeg arts community. The award will be a unique work of art and a $1,000 cash donation on behalf of the winner to the Winnipeg arts organization of his or her choice.
