Nominate someone for a Winnipeg Arts Council Award
The Winnipeg Arts Council Awards have been presented every summer since 2007, celebrating the artists, as well as arts administrators, volunteers and patrons, who contribute so much to our community. June 2020 would have marked the 14th annual awards celebration but like so many other events, it was cancelled due to Covid-19.
We feel, however, that in spite of the myriad challenges faced by the arts community this year, it is important to celebrate. And so with that in mind we are asking Winnipeg’s artists and arts organizations to make nominations for the 2020 Winnipeg Arts Council Awards.
Nominations are open effective immediately, and will be accepted until Friday October 9, 2020.
This year’s process will unfold in much the same way as it has in the past, albeit without an in-person ceremony. We are accepting nominations in each of the five award categories and a jury will determine the winners. Each winner will receive a cash award of $5,000 (for artists and arts administrators) or a work of art by a Winnipeg artist (for volunteers and arts patrons).
Winners will be announced in late 2020. This year we will not release a short list of nominees, rather, only the award winners will be announced. The announcement of each award winner will be accompanied by a short film created by a Winnipeg filmmaker and distributed by social media and other online outlets.
It is our hope that despite the trying times, we can adapt this annual tradition to the current reality and celebrate the achievements and the resilience of Winnipeg’s arts community.
We encourage Winnipeg artists and arts organizations to make nominations. Please see the full criteria below and contact Dominic Lloyd, Program & Arts Development Manager, with any questions.
The deadline for nominations is Friday October 9, 2020.
Awards to Artists and Arts Administrators
Three awards recognize excellence and creativity in the arts: the RBC On The Rise Award, the Making a Mark Award and the Making a Difference Award.
The RBC On The Rise Award recognizes the demonstrated promise of an emerging, professional Winnipeg artist in any discipline. This award is intended to help with the artist’s professional development. The jury may consider individuals of any age who have recently embarked on an artistic career. The RBC On The Rise Award recipient will receive a cash prize.
The Making a Mark Award applauds an established professional Winnipeg artist in any discipline, who is receiving critical recognition for excellence in their art practice in Winnipeg and beyond. The Making A Mark Award recipient will receive a cash prize generously supported by Gail Asper, O.C., O.M., LL.D.
The Making a Difference Award celebrates the contribution of a Winnipeg artist or arts professional to the growth and development of the arts in any discipline in Winnipeg. This award will likely go to someone well-established in their field. The Making A Difference Award recipient will receive a cash prize.
Awards to Arts Patrons
Two awards are presented to recipients from outside the arts community but whose ongoing support to the community is vital to the success of the arts in Winnipeg.
The Arts Champion Award honours an individual, a business or a non-arts organization that has demonstrated sustained support to the arts in Winnipeg. The award is a unique work of art.
The Outstanding Volunteer Award honours an individual who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to volunteerism within the Winnipeg arts community. The award is a unique work of art as well as a cash donation on behalf of the winner to the Winnipeg arts organization of his or her choice.
